About Nag Horse Ranch
Susan Gray, CEO of Nag Horse Ranch, shares the story of how her horse Bill inspired her to create the Nag Horse Ranch Sun Protection Line:

During July of 2010 I purchased “Bill”, an American Quarter Horse trained in Reining.  My husband and I were learning the discipline and considered him perfect for the job.  It was both exciting and challenging to ride Bill, and after getting him home I found it was also a challenge to care for him.   Bill has a large blaze and white muzzle and I soon realized how easily and severely those white noses burn.  I would slather sunscreen on him every morning having to actually put it in his nostrils and in his lips, it took quite some time to rub it in and he would be out sweating and washing it off in the water trough in no time.  Sunscreen was messy, it did not stay on well, and it attracted dirt and grime.  It was simply ineffective.   Bills muzzle was rough, crusty and sore because of this.  I searched for a product that would effectively protect him, to no avail; thus began my mission to solve the problem, and solve it I did. 

Within two weeks I had a funky burlap darted floppy covering over Bills muzzle.   I then started searching for quality UV proof materials and began designing shades for the muzzle with a trial and error method.  Bill became so used to me going out with a pile of material and a carrot he just would run to me every time he saw this sight, lower his head and let me try stuff on him.   Within months I had the perfect solution: a nose shade that provided UV protection and was designed to flare away from the muzzle for comfort and ventilation.  I started a production line, filed for a patent, developed a web-site and launched Nag Horse Ranch sun protection products.

Bill started a whole new product for horses with white muzzles and faces.  In launching this product I would come across customers with additional needs so I expanded to include a full face shade and from there several others.   I now have 17 styles of shades on my web-site, customers in 44 states and 13 countries and all of this has transpired in 8 short months!

Bill started a very exciting endeavor for me; I have immensely enjoyed all of the opportunities to talk to fellow horse owners and to have a solution to help them and their horses.  Being a horse owner and enthusiast all of my life, I never knew that there was a problem with light skinned horses.  I suppose it is no different than people in the sun some fairer than others, I just never thought about it and certainly never viewed it as a concern.

I never dreamt that because of purchasing Bill my life would become a whirlwind of exciting business startup, in a field I am passionate about.  I now watch him out with the other horses basking in the sun with his simple halter free shade on.  He is as happy as can be and I am elated to know that we have made a difference in so many lives of both horses and horse owners!  Not only is Bill great to ride but he also makes a great model and has the patience to help me with designing!  He is an amazing horse and I will always be grateful for the joy and experience he has brought me.

Nag Horse Ranch Sun Protection Products
Horses with fair skin suffer from many sun related problems- especially on their tender noses and around their eyes!  Severe sunburn, blistering, skin cancer, to name a few.   If you have a horse with light skin sun protection is critical.  As well as horses with eye diseases such as Uveitis, Glaucoma, Cataracts, or Cancer removed from around the eyes, eye protection is also critical. We have found a solution for owners of these horses that is simple, user friendly and replaces the need for messy sunscreen and that solution is the Nag Horse Ranch Sun Protection line of products.  We have developed this  line of  90% UV proof shades, of which all are made with quality materials that are extremely durable and effective for preventing sun damage. Here are descriptions of the different shades we offer:

• Nose Shades- Our nose shades flare away from the horses face allowing adequate ventilation and comfort, while protecting the entire muzzle.  Horses can graze and drink easily.

 

• Full Face Shades- Full face shades hold their shape and resist resting on the horse's face, providing UV protection for sensitive eyes and fair skin around the eyes, they double as a fly mask.

 

• Eye Protection Only Shades- Eye protection only shades prevent sun damage around the horses eyes, protecting sensitive eyes, and light skin around the eyes from sunburn.  Also horses with Uveitis, moon blindness, cataracts or other eye diseases must have sun protection.  Our eye shades also act like a fly mask, protecting from flies and bugs.

 

• Trail Riding Shades- Trail riding sun protection shades, deter insects along the trails while adding UV protection to the muzzle or full face. The material scoops around the muzzle to ward off the insects without interfereing with the bridle or bit in any way.

 

• Sun Visor- Our sun visors attach to the browband of the bridle and shade the horses' eyes without covering them just like a sun visor people wear.

 

• Attach to Bridle eye shade- A small easy to take with you eye only protection shade that attaches to the bridle for trail riding protecting the eyes and light skin around them.

Are Nag Horse Ranch Shades Durable and Are They Washable?
The answer to both questions is yes! Our shades are easily washable you may hose them off and they do dry fast and they are also machine washable. Our screen mesh material is the strongest available, resist fraying or tearing, holds its shape, does not rest on the horse face, is durable, rot and mildew resistant, virtually indestructible. Our nylon webbing is heavy duty and also UV proof, with rot and mildew resistance.

What Do Customers Say About Nag Horse Ranch?
Living in Florida means we battle sun and heat all year long. Our mare has a very nice pink nose that burns easily. I have tried everything to keep her from burning. Sunscreens, diaper creams, and long nosed fly masks have been the only tools available to work with. However the fly mask doesn't block enough UV, makes her sweat excessively and thus renders the sunscreen useless. She has also had some adverse reactions to some of the sunscreens.  My search for an alternative has been exhaustive. 

After a week with the Nag Nose Shade I already see huge improvement!  It is not restrictive or hot. It also is not rubbing her face the way the fly mask did.  I am not having to keep applying lotions and creams either.  If you have a pink nosed horse do yourself and your horse a huge favor and try this new product.  I love it!

I just wanted to say the shade fits perfectly, so thank you so much for your help with sizing. I'm so happy with it. I worry that sun cream does not protect him for long enough and rubs off when he eats. I have a mask with a nose attachment but Harry constantly clears his nose with it on, trying to get it away from his nostrils, which makes it very mucky and very hard for me to leave him with it on as I feel so bad that he doesn’t like it. He was happy to have his nag shade on and not one sneeze so far, so you can imagine we are both over the moon with this amazing product which has uniquely really considered the comfort to the horse.
