Collecting Model Horses by e-ModelHorses.com
Model Horses

model horseMy name is Andrew and it has been my pleasure to work with the staff of e-Modelhorses.com for quite some time. Growing up, I was never much of a horse person.  It's kind of odd because in our area of Colorado everyone seems to own a horse. My time as a child was spent studying history, not riding. So, as an adult it was fairly odd that I would work at a company where my job is to write about model horses. I didn't know anything about horse models when I started working at E-Modelhorses.com. I didn't understand why people collected model horses. I could see there were different sizes and colors, but in my mind, a model horse was just a girl’s toy.

The entire staff helps when it is time to inventory on our extensive line of Breyer model horses, so I found myself counting quantities, going from rack to rack. One of Breyer horses caught my attention. The name of the horse was Bucephalus, not your ordinary horses name. The name sounded so familiar I couldn’t set the box down. Then it clicked; this legendary animal was Alexander the Great’s war horse. For those that don’t know, Alexander the Great was world’s greatest general, at the age of 18 he started a campaign to take over the known world at the time, which included Greece, Egypt, and parts of what is today Turkey. By the time he was 22 he had conquered more than the known world, going as far East as where India stands today. The first glimpse the world saw of Alexander’s greatness came with the very horse I was holding a model of in my hand.

Alexander the GreatAs the story goes Alexander’s father Phillip, who ruled a country called Macedonia north of Greece, was out one day in the wilderness hunting when his servants ran to him claiming to have caught the mightiest horse in the
world. Phillip was always on the look for great horses, because in those days a king with a mighty horse meant he ruled a mighty empire. So Phillip with his son Alexander, whom at the time was only 12 years old, made a trek to the valley where the horse was caught. When they came over the hill, there was a mighty horse indeed, a black monster of an animal that was two and half men wide with a temper like a thunderstorm. Three men were trying to contain the animal, holding two ropes around his head, and another rope around his mid section. The horse was lashing out violently, throwing his captors from side to side. The strength of the animal was dwarfed only by his gigantic size. When Philip saw the horse his eyes popped wide open and his jaw dropped, he had never seen such a perfect specimen of a horse. This wasn’t a horse for a king, this was a horse for a god; except for it’s unruly temper. Phillip remarked to a servant that the horse could never be trained, it was too powerful to respect a man and it was wild with anger. So Phillip ordered his servants to let the horse go back into the wild.
At this turn the young Alexander looked at his father and said, “What a shame to let such a creature roam wild, let me have a try at taming him.” Phillip let out a heavy laugh, here was his son , a boy of 12 that weighed not more than a fraction of the animal he intended to tame. Phillip replied, “This is what I love about my son, his imagination goes far beyond the possible. One day he also claims he will conquer the entire world! Have at it boy, it’s time you learned a bit about reality.”

So with that Alexander walked up to the animal, which was still violently trying to elude his captors. Alexander made a few relaxing calls, and the animals fixed it’s attention on Alexander.
He kept making the relaxing sounds while moving forward to the horse, the horses hooves stamped less and less. Finally Alexander yelled at the servants to let go of their ropes. The horse was fully free, but fully relaxed, so Alexander moved out his hand and touched the horse’s nose. The horse did not flinch, but moved closer. Alexander rubbed the horse around the body, while the servants backed away slowly in case the horse should decide to charge. After a few minutes of courting the horse, without a saddle or reins, Alexander jumped onto the back of the animal. The horse did not bolt, nor did it even buck, it allowed Alexander to ride. Alexander screamed up to his father, “I shall call him Bucephalus (ox-head), for the fear he will instill in my enemies upon the battlefield.” At which point the amazed king Phillip rode down to his son and exclaimed, “Look you out a kingdom equal to and worthy of yourself, for Macedonia is too little for you.” .

After my daydream I learned that collecting model horses is a great hobby for everyone. These miniature replicas have the ability to stimulate the imagination in both child and adult alike. Furthermore, I learned that model horses are not just for entertainment, they are a way to remember and live history.
