Tire Pressure Monitoring Saves Money and Lowers Environmental Impact
Tire Pressure Safety and Economy

Article by

For over 18 years, interest has grown in Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) products, from horse trailers to autos, RVs, light trucks, tractor/trailers, buses and heavy industrial equipment users. Over the last 2 years however, they’ve seen interest in TPMS grow exponentially.  Drivers and fleets of all types are beginning to understand the significant benefits TPMS provides.  The increase in awareness of carbon emissions and lower fuel use, rising gas prices, the increased costs of tires and the understanding of the relationship of low tire pressure to accidents, injuries and deaths as well as insurance costs are stimulating strong interest in maintaining proper tire pressure.

The Department of Transportation estimates that 37% of all tires on American roadways are under inflated; under inflated tires decrease a vehicle’s average MPG by as much as 3.3%.  Under inflated tires also waste over 5.4 million gallons of fuel everyday (over 2 billion gallons each year) in the U.S. alone.  Additionally, low tire pressure is the #1 cause of tire failure and contributes to tire disintegration, heat buildup, ply separation and sidewall/casing breakdowns.  And, under inflated tires lead to tread separation and tire failure resulting in 40,000 accidents, 33,000 injuries, and over 650 deaths.

Below are reasons why these four simple letters, “TPMS” can have such an impact on safety and savings during your travels.

Reasons to always keep your tires properly inflated: (i.e. prevent under-inflated & over-inflated tires)

•Vehicle Safety - Proper tire inflation greatly reduces the potential of a tire blowout that can lead to unwanted road-side emergencies, damage to vehicles and/or your horses, and even personal injury.

•Accuracy/Reliability - Real time TPMS allows drivers to quickly respond to an audible beep and a visual alert emitted by the TPMS alarm when the tire pressure falls to dangerous levels. Aftermarket TPMS products can usually detect any air leakage in seconds.

•Improved Fuel Economy - The Department of Transportation estimates that 5 million gallons of fuel per day (over 2 billion per year) are wasted due to low tire pressure. Under-inflated tires increase the rolling resistance of vehicles and, correspondingly, decrease their fuel economy. By providing real time tire pressure readings, TPMS helps drivers maintain optimal pressure allowing increased fuel efficiency and big savings at the pumps!

•Enhanced Vehicle Performance - Tires with low air pressures require greater stopping distances and cause deterioration in tire performance.  For example, tires low on pressure skid and hydroplane more easily. TPMS provides the information drivers need to allow optimum performance of vehicles through greater stability, handling and braking in both wet and dry conditions, providing additional safety for your valuable cargo.

•Increased Tire & Tread Life - When a tire is under-inflated, more pressure is placed on the casing of the tire, causing the tread to wear more rapidly than it would if the tire were inflated to the proper pressure. It is estimated that properly inflated tires can extend the life of tire treads and casing by as much as 35%. TPMS provides the information needed to maximize tire and tread life.

•Tires running low on pressure use more gas to overcome greater rolling resistance, producing added carbon pollutants.  The DOT states that added fuel use resulting from low tire pressure adds 57.5 BILLION pounds of Carbon pollutants into the atmosphere each year.  Prematurely worn tires add to landfill waste as well as resulting in an unnecessary use of raw resources to replace an estimated 80 million tires prematurely worn each year due to low pressure.  Further, running tires low on pressure lead to dangerous roadside debris (‘alligators’ from blown tires) as well as added air pollutants (tire particles) caused by unnecessary flex of low pressure tires which add to air pollution.

•TPM Systems give you the information you need to maintain properly inflated tires, which result in significant savings and safety.

Dealing with Duals
Vehicles with dual axels have hidden inner tires that are often more difficult to reach. As such, these inside duals often are easier to neglect which could be detrimental as checking the air pressure of the inside tires is an utter necessity. Even if an inside tire is flat, it can be supported by the outside tire making it appear properly inflated. In cases such as these visual inspections would warrant no action and the outer tire would continue travel with added stress and pressure, causing permanent damage. What’s more, a difference of only 10 lbs in pressure between a set of duals literally drags the lower pressured tire 13 feet per mile. These issues results in an at-risk tire, prone to overheating , rupturing or - if the tire is a retread - the possibility of tread releasing from the casing…an outcome that could lead to a major highway accident.

Thus:  Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems
1.Save Fuel
2.Drive Green
3.Cut Downtime
4.Extend Tire Life
5.Reduce Maintenance
6.Improve Performance
7.Add Safety

When considering an investment in a Tire Pressure Monitoring System, look for these feature and capabilities:

• Alerts when tire pressure is low
• Alerts when tire pressure is high
• Alerts driver with both visual and auditory warnings
• Capable of monitoring both the vehicle and a trailer

The answer:  you need one of these…
Pressure Pro Tire Monitoring System

                        “Reliable Under Pressure”

PressurePro, Wireless Tire Pressure Monitoring
PressurePro has been leading and developing the TPMS market and technology since 1991. PressurePro provides drivers with continuous tire pressure readings whether a vehicle is parked or moving. PressurePro’s basic system consists of two main components: Sensors and a Monitor. Sensors screw onto the valve stem of your tires, replacing the dust caps. The Sensors transmit a coded RF signal and alert to pressure drops and increases. The Monitor sits in the cab of your vehicle and displays each tire’s pressure; it also provides an audible and visual alert to low and high pressure situations.

PressurePro systems alert at three pressure thresholds; two at low pressure and one at high. The first low alert occurs when tire pressures drop more than 12.5%.  A second, more urgent alert occurs if tire pressures drop by more than 25%. A third alert, which can be set by customers per their needs, alarms to high pressures.

The DOT estimates that tires running properly inflated could eliminate 250 lbs of greenhouse gas emissions per vehicle per year.   Known as pioneers in the TPMS industry, PressurePro continues to push the envelope on TPMS technology by continuing to provide advancements in the market.  PressurePro tire pressure monitors assists drivers in “DRIVING GREEN”.
