Hay Pillow™
The Hay Pillow™ is the most effective, versatile, easy to use high quality slow feeding hay bag on the market.

The Standard Hay Pillow™
The Standard Hay Pillow™ is designed for use on the ground, this allows your horse to eat in a natural “grazing” position. Available in 5 mesh sizes: ½”, ¾” 30 twine, ¾’ 21 twine, 1” and 1 ¼”. The Standard Hay Pillow™ may also be clipped in a tub OR hung to use in a stall or horse trailer. Five tabs are included on your Hay Pillow™ for clips or rope to be attached to. Please view our options for mounting or hanging page on the website.

Why Is Feeding My Horse From Ground Level Best?

  • Less strain on the skeletal system and soft tissue, a horse is designed to eat with the head down.
  • Allows the mandible (jaw bone) to come down and forward in the joint capsule, the atlantoaxial joint (between the atlas and the axis between the two vertebrae) to open, and the mandible to move up and down, side to side forward and back without any restriction.

Hanging Hay Pillow ™
Hanging Hay Pillow ™ is also available for those who prefer to hang a bag the majority of the time. Great for horse trailers and stalls! The drawstring closure seals the top so hay can only be accessed through the netting. The bottom of the bag includes a mesh material to allow dust to sift through or water to drain if you soak your hay. There are currently 4 mesh sizes to choose from :  ¾” 30 twine, ¾’ 21 twine, 1” and 1 ¼”.

Why Should I Use A Slow Feeder System For My Horse?
Reduces the risk of ulcers. A horse's stomach produces acid 24 hours a day in preparation for constant uptake and can empty in as little as 15-20 minutes. Saliva and hay reduce stomach acid. Equines naturally graze 18-24 hours a day therefore food should always be available. The lack of food produces a stressful situation which can be a large contributing factor.

Increased digestion. If your horse consumes hay too quickly, it will not have enough time to digest it properly. Proper digestion and fermentation require time and movement. Using multiple bags/locations will encourage both. This will keep fermentation going consistently, effectively keeping the hindgut weighted and healthy , as a result, preventing conditions that can contribute to colic.

Minimize or alleviates boredom. Horses allowed to continuously slow feed benefit both physiologically and psychologically. Being kept occupied helps to prevent vices from developing. Horses only sleep 3 to 4 hours in a 24 hour period and usually no longer than 20 minutes at a time, food tends to be their main focus.
Increased chew time wears teeth more naturally and produces more saliva.

Little to no wasted hay. Saving you money!

Weight management. Hay is grass with the water reduced; each mouthful is a more concentrated source of calories. Hay contains seven to eight times more calories than live grass per pound. Grass is 70 to 80% water as opposed to sun cured hay at 5 to 10%. If your horse is overweight, slow feeding will help to regulate insulin spikes and metabolism. If underweight, can help increase digestion and assimilation of calories and nutrients.

How Safe Is The Hay Pillow™?
The Hay Pillow™ is extremely safe if your horse is barefoot. Always use extreme caution if mounting anything your horse has access to. If your horse is shod, the Hanging Hay Pillow™ should be hung high enough to not enable a horseshoe to be caught in. To use The Hay Pillow™ at ground level you may clip inside a tub tall enough to NOT allow the horses foot or shoe to reach inside it. See our options for mounting or hanging page.

What Do Customers say About The Hay Pillow™?
I am a veterinary surgeon who has recently switched his focus from general practice to specialize exclusively on horses’ feet and to concentrate on studies and research into laminitis. There are great benefits in ‘slow-feeding’ horses and I have witnessed just how effective The Hay Pillow™ is. I am also impressed with the quality of the product. I would recommend The Hay Pillow™ to all horse owners.

I ordered 2, one for each of my horses. It took them a few days to figure out that the pillow is now their hay source! Once they figured that out, they now know how to turn them over when the mesh side gets flipped to the down side. They do paw at them to get to the hay when it gets low. It's by trial and error for them, but I stayed with them (or at least watching from my window) to be sure they wouldn't get too frustrated. If I saw their efforts to get at the hay were unsuccessful too many times, I went to help. It's now been about 4 days and when they see the pillows come out they race to see who gets the first one! I'm very happy with the pillows as they make the hay last over several hours. They used to gobble it in just about 30 minutes and then stand there bored for another several hours 'til fed again. My neighbor's dog chewed one of the pillows, so I've ordered a replacement because I think they are worth it!

Our appaloosa, Harvey, is in love with his Hay Pillow™. He loves it because it slows down his consumption so he can do what he loves to do best, which is eat longer. We love it because it wastes very little hay, slows his intake thereby extending his grazing time and has helped him lose those unwanted extra pounds. More importantly, Harvey has had no episodes of colic since he began using his Hay Pillows™. We consider the Hay Pillow one of the most well-constructed healthy horse interventions on the market today!
