Your Horses Love The Pasture, But Is Too Much Grass Posing A Health Risk?
Horses are meant to be outside, moving around and grazing at will. Pasture turnout offers horses many benefits, but too much of a good thing is not always a good thing. Our Tough1 Grazing Muzzles can be just the answer!
Turn Out Time is Important For Equine Health
The constant movement that occurs during pasture time is important not only for gastrointestinal health, but also for maintaining low-level fitness and increasing calorie utilization (especially important for overweight horses). Horses in group turnout also gain social interaction time which isn't as available in a stalled environment. However pasture turnout can also result in large and typically uncontrolled intakes of forage, leading to weight gain and its associated health risks of equine metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, and laminitis in some horses.
What Has Research Shown?
While there are a few methods to limit forage intake during pasture time, including slow feeders and reducing grazing time, grazing muzzles have been found to be a popular solution. Research has shown that using grazing muzzles on ponies that were stabled but turned out on pasture for three hours resulted in an 83% decrease in pasture intake. Other studies have found decreases of just under 80%.
So, How Do We Limit The "Buffet"?
Introducing your horse to a wearing a grazing muzzle is a win-win. It keeps your worry down by restricting a potentially dangerous diet but also keeps your horse happily grazing with his buddies as normal as possible. You'll want to start by deciding what style muzzle is a good fit for your horse, followed by proper fit, and lastly introduction/wear.

Deluxe V Nose - Includes the innovative V straps, but includes some extra padding at crown and jaw for even more horse comfort.
How Do I Fit My Grazing Muzzle?
It's important to use a proper fitting muzzle on your horse, not only for comfort but for safety. Too tight, and the muzzle could rub sores on your horse's face. Too loose, and it can easily be slipped off or get caught on a fence or gate, potentially causing an accident. We've highlighted the best way to insure your horse's muzzle fits appropriately with our video How To: Fit the Tough1 Easy Breathe Grazing Muzzle on the Tough®1 YouTube Channel. See below!
Here Are Some Tips To Fit Your Tough1 Easy Breathe Grazing Muzzle:
On the basket portion of the muzzle, you want to be able to fit two fingers between your horse's nose and the muzzle. The same goes for the space between the bottom of the basket and the lips of your horse.
There are three locations for fit adjustments:
Cheeks, throat latch and the crown piece. Slide these buckles up or down to get that custom fit.
The Quick Grip crown closures are NOT meant to be used for size adjustment. These are to be used as a safety feature. We recommend you adjust these breakaway closures prior to adjusting the crown strap slide buckle.
If you want the breakaway feature to be its strongest, in case of the muzzle getting caught, we call that fully loaded, insert the center strap all the way in
If you want the breakaway feature to be easier to release, in case of the muzzle getting caught, do not insert the piece all the way, but adjust accordingly.
If you're using a V Nose muzzle style, you can adjust the two nose pieces to help with how the muzzle hangs on your horse's nose.
Muzzle Safety Tips That Are Important To Know!
An essential point for grazing muzzle safety is to make sure that your muzzle fits appropriately and comfortably for your horse. That's why Tough®1 offers muzzles in so many sizes, a muzzle should NOT be "one size fits all".
The Quick Grip release straps on our muzzles are the most important feature. While these closures offer you reassurance that the muzzle will stay on your horse, the breakaway feature will come apart, even when it is fully loadedwith the force of the animal wearing it.
When turning your horse out with a grazing muzzle, be sure the pasture does not have anything protruding that the horse can hook the muzzle to, such as low tree branches or broken boards from fences. Do not use a grazing muzzle with a round hay bale in a ring or even in a hay net.
For horses that are more prone to rubbing, Tough1 does offer muzzle liners in synthetic mink or sheepskin, which can be purchased separately for extra cushion.
Make Sure To Check On Your Horse, Especially The FIRST Day of Use!
Especially for the FIRST DAY that your horse is first getting used to their muzzle, make sure to CHECK ON THEM! Don't let several hours go by without looking in on them--try to check on them after 30 minutes, then progress to longer periods of time-- at least a few times a day. Make sure your horse is drinking and comfortable and that he or she has regular time without the muzzle on, to eat his usual food and water intake. Most horses adjust to their muzzles very quickly, but make sure that your horse is doing well and comfortable, before you leave them for the day.
